Spring '24 Update...
Go Girls Go ended another great season on May 11, 2024, with the celebratory 5k. There were 9 schools from 3 districts that participated in the program that ran from March through May, two days a week. These districts included Chambersburg, Waynesboro and Tuscarora School Districts. Three schools ran their programs with only technical assistance from HCP. These schools were JB Middle School, Mercersburg Elementary School and Montgomery Elementary School. The other participating schools included, Waynesboro Middle School, Chambersburg Middle School- South, Andrew Buchanan Elementary School, South Hamilton Elementary School, Guilford Hills Elementary School, and Marion Elementary School.
Over 360 person turned out to walk/run the event and another few hundred people showed up to cheer their friends, family and community on!! The rain held back in the morning, so the runners and walkers could enjoy the outdoor event and festivities afterward.
We thank all the volunteers who helped with race day and also a great big thanks to the adult mentors who work with HCP staff and school staff to get the girls ready for race day. They work side by side with the girls during lessons and to help them learn to run and push themselves to get better and stronger. This spring we had 70 mentors who volunteered their time and talents to help these young women.
GO GIRLS GO!
Go Girls Go! is a program for girls in 4th - 6th grade that is designed to improve the health and well-being for girls at one of the most vulnerable times of their lives. Research shows girls frequently drop out of organized sports around this age and many become very sedentary. This program is designed with both educational lessons and physical activities---working to educate and empower young girls to improve their self-esteem, goal setting, friendships, and increase their physical activity.
Go Girls Go! is offered to various grades and schools within Chambersburg and Waynesboro. Girls meet twice a week for ten weeks before the final celebration at the Go Girls Go! 5K race. During these sessions the girls learn invaluable skills such as proper nutrition, healthy friendships, running techniques, goal setting, etc.. The girls also work on improving running endurance and overall and fitness. Go Girls Go! improves girls' self-esteem and self-image throughout the program.
PROGRAM DETAILS
VOLUNTEER MENTOR
Go Girls Go! is a heavily volunteer driven program. Mentors primarily join for the running session of the program. Mentors lead small groups of girls safely through neighborhoods, focusing on motivating and providing words of encouragement to the girls. Mentors can be of all running levels. Site leaders will pair runners of similar speeds together. Mentors may receive free entry into the race if they attend at least nine Go Girls Go! practices. 5K RACE
Go Girls Go! celebrates the achievements and hard work of the girls through a 5K at the end of the season. All girls participating in Go Girls Go! receive free entry into the race. Family members and mentors are encouraged to register and run with the girls throughout the race. Proceeds from the 5K race go on to fund the upcoming season of Go Girls Go!
Go Girls Go values all qualities that make our participants and mentors who they are.
